Higher Ed to offer real estate courses

Cook County Higher Education will offer courses for property owners through a Real Estate Continuing Education, Land and Property Development series.

“Fundamentals of Home Inspection and Residential Building Analysis,” Nov. 7, will be conducted by Betsy Zavoral, a certified home inspector. She will discuss how a home is inspected and evaluated — including a hands-on inspection.

The second 4-hour course is on “Residential Shoreland Management, Regulations and Recommendations,” Nov. 14, taught by Cook County Planning Director Tim Nelson.

This is a shoreland familiarization class with reference to Cook County zoning ordinances. It covers many basics as well as shoreland septic systems, stormwater erosion control.

On Nov. 21, Chris Wilberg will hold a class on “Mold: Your Health and Your Home.” Wilberg is a certified industrial hygienist. Also four hours in length, the class is aimed at the general public and real estate agents and discusses mold problems, removal and clean-up, as well as health problems.

LeRoy Halberg, the county’s environmental health specialist, will conduct a 4-hour course on “Identifying Health Risks in the Home: Radon and Water Quality.”

The class is offered Nov. 28 and discusses radon risks and what to do about them as well as ground and surface water, drinking water and contamination.

Tuition for each class is $55.
