Workers installing protective covering at building entrances

ST. PAUL, MN – December 8, 2010 – (RealEstateRama) — Contractors this week will begin inspecting the condition of decorative stonework along the roofline of the State Capitol building. As a safety measure, workers will install protective covering at building entrances and place barricades along several adjacent walkways.

A November survey of the Capitol roof identified several areas of deterioration along the building’s cornice – the horizontal molding extending outward from near the top of the exterior walls. Based on the preliminary findings of that survey, the Department of Administration authorized this more extensive investigation, which is expected to take about six weeks. The findings will help further determine the direction of a comprehensive investigation, slated to begin next summer, of the condition of the building’s exterior.

Pedestrian traffic during the inspection will be directed by barricades to covered building entrances. Contractors will conduct the inspection from suspended scaffolding and a truck hoist. Barricades will be removed as areas are inspected and verified safe.

A diagram showing entrance coverings, barricades and egress paths is available online at www.admin.state.mn.us/documents/capitol.pdf.
