MINNEAPOLIS – December 30, 2013 – (RealEstateRama) — Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) released the following statement today as unemployment insurance expires for 1.3 million Americans:
“The longer a Minnesotan is out of work, the harder it is for her to find a job. Unemployment insurance helps the long-term unemployed buy groceries and pay the mortgage while the economy recovers and more jobs open up.

“The current long-term unemployment rate, 2.6% in October, is double what it was the last time an extension of unemployment insurance was allowed to expire, but Republicans refused to pass an extension for 2014. 9,231 Minnesotans, including 2,308 in Hennepin County, may now lose this lifeline in early January.
“Failure to renew the unemployment insurance extension will hurt families and cost the economy 240,000 jobs in 2014. I urge my colleagues to act as soon as we return to Washington to renew unemployment insurance and protect Minnesotans who are struggling to find work.”
