WASHINGTON, D.C. – July 15, 2015 – (RealEstateRama) — Imagine a city street being used not by cars, but rather by people dancing, biking, rock climbing, talking and even bouncing. That’s what will be happening July 19, from 2 to 5 p.m. on Third Street between 24th and 27th Avenues West in Lincoln Park during the second annual Meet on the Street event. The three-block stretch will be closed to motorized traffic to enable people of all ages to join in active play and gather as a community. The event is free and open to the public.
“Meet on the Street gives people a chance to experience the street in a whole new way,” said Josh Gorham, St. Louis County Public Health Nurse. “It’s more than just a block party. It’s an organized effort involving many community partners, to give people the chance to use the urban landscape, and to promote active living and healthy communities.”
An estimated 1,000 people took part in the first Meet on the Street, and organizers have built on the fun. Activities this year include a rock climbing wall, bouncy house, bike rodeo, live remote radio broadcast, arts and crafts, and food vendors. Additionally, people are encouraged to bike, dance, hopscotch or do whatever other healthy activity they can think of.
Sponsors of Meet on the Street include St. Louis County, Duluth LISC, Healthy Northland, UCare, and 95 KQDS. Positive Energy Outdoors is providing the rock climbing wall. Community Action Duluth is sponsoring a bike give-away drawing.
Meet on the Street is one of two Open Streets events held in Duluth this year. The other is Hillfest, scheduled for August 23 at the intersection of 6th Avenue East and 4th Street. Similar events are held across the United States and continue to grow in popularity as communities recognize the importance of health considerations as they are planned and designed.
