Nolan Sponsors Bill to End Afghanistan War Funding – Calls for Major Reinvestment in America’s Infrastructure

WASHINGTON, DC – January 15, 2012 – (RealEstateRama) — Calling for an end to America’s military involvement in Afghanistan, Minnesota’s Eighth District Congressman Rick Nolan said today, “It’s time to stop building infrastructure in Afghanistan and start rebuilding America.” President Obama and many others including Nolan have repeatedly called for significant new investments to repair and rebuild America’s aging infrastructure.

To that end, Nolan, who earlier secured a position on the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, today added his name to a growing list of bipartisan co-sponsors to H.R. 200, “The Responsible End to the War in Afghanistan Act” (H.R. 780 in the 112th Congress).

The legislation limits war funding in Afghanistan to the safe and orderly withdrawal of all Armed Forces Members and military contractor personnel from Afghanistan.

“The war in Afghanistan is now in its thirteenth year and has cost us over $600 billion. There is no military solution in Afghanistan and keeping our troops posted through 2014 will only delay the inevitable,” Nolan said.

“Voters in Minnesota’s Eighth District, like millions of others across our great nation, sent a clear message in November that it is time to end unsustainable wars of choice, reduce dramatically our military footprint in unnecessary outposts throughout the world, and re-invest in America with projects that generate good paying middle class jobs, improve the quality of our lives and lay the foundation for good economic development.”

“Here in the Eighth District alone, there are more than three-hundred bridges and hundreds of miles of roads along with schools, court houses and parks in urgent need of repair and rebuilding. In the Port of Duluth for example, sea walls need to be shorn up now – and a 125-year-old water main system must be upgraded to prevent more $35,000 ruptures like the one that took place earlier this month.”

This legislation represents an important step in redirecting America’s priorities homeward,” Nolan concluded.
